  • To commemorate the hosting of the 2004 Seoul ICOM General Conference, Hanyang University Museum prepared the Special Exhibition, "Jangseok," where one can feel the Spirit of Ancient Artisans.

In line with the conference theme, "Museums and Intangible Heritage," this exhibition showcases Jangseok (ornamental metalware) used from the Late Joseon Dynasty to the early 20th century, along with approximately 10 pieces of Traditional Wooden Furniture utilizing the metalware. Visitors can appreciate over 5,500 pieces of various Jangseok types alongside the beautifully adorned traditional wooden furniture in one location.

Jangseok is a term encompassing metal components used for three main purposes: providing Structural reinforcement of joints to prevent architectural elements or furniture from warping or being damaged; facilitating the opening and closing function of doors; and serving as Ornamentation for beautiful adornment.

Before the Joseon Dynasty, Jangseok was not widely distributed among commoners. However, following the Imjin War, commoners began crafting wooden furniture previously reserved for the Privileged Class or acquiring furniture from impoverished yangban (nobility).

This exhibition is highly meaningful as it allows us to reflect on the Spirit of the Duseok Jangin (Master Metalware Artisans), as the metal decorating, originally created for the practical purpose of joining and fastening wooden furniture, were reborn as beautiful Jangseok.
