Hanyang University Museum organized the Special Exhibition, "Pavilion of Healing: Stacked with Wood, Growing with Wood," as part of the 2023 “Museum Made Together” Support Program.
In collaboration with Professor Kim Jae-kyung of the Department of Architecture, the museum installed the "Pavilion of Healing" at the Open Songhyeon Green Plaza and on the Hanyang University campus. The museum section introduces Professor Kim Jae-kyung’s achievements in reinterpreting East Asian Wooden Architecture.
The Pavilion of Healing is a contemporary Jeongja (traditional Korean Pavilion) that reinterprets East Asian Wooden Architecture using the latest technology. It is an endeavor to find new possibilities for Wooden Architecture, a tradition that has existed for millennia but has been marginalized by Concrete Architecture.
At the same time, the Pavilion of Healing is an Architecture of Metaphor. For some, it might appear in its original meaning; for others, it might resemble African vernacular architecture. Its form, which reinterprets the joints and brackets of traditional architecture, might be perceived simply as wood. The Pavilion, supported by three pillars, could even be regarded as an artificial forest.
Thus, the Pavilion of Healing is intended to become a unique resting place, relying on the interpretation of the observer and visitor rather than solely its original meaning. This intention addresses the desire of this era, which demands new value from architecture. The reason architecture was born was to provide a place for people to rest their bodies and minds, and we live in a time when that primal value is needed once again.
Ultimately, could the Pavilion of Healing be seen as the Rebirth of the earliest architecture?

Period: 2023.05.03.(Wed)~05.14.(Sun)
The Pavilion of Healing was exhibited for two weeks at the Open Songhyeon Green Plaza in Jongno-gu, Seoul. This location was inaccessible to the public for about 110 years, dating back to the Japanese colonial period. Despite multiple changes in ownership and repeated cancellations of development plans, leaving it barricaded by high walls and iron gates, the space was finally opened to the public in 2022. Standing at the entrance to the plaza from Anguk Station Exit 1, the Pavilion stands before a wide lawn with Mount Inwangsan and Mount Bugaksan unfolding behind it. Birds fly freely above. It is a moment where nature, architecture, and humanity meet anew in the heart of Seoul. Standing in front of the reinforced concrete buildings, the Pavilion of Healing attracts attention by harmonizing naturally yet feeling distinctly different at that boundary. We hope that this Pavilion of Healing project served as a small catalyst for healing in Songhyeon-dong, a place long inaccessible to the public.

2. Hanyang University HIT Front Lawn and Museum 3F Special Exhibition Gallery
Period: 2023.05.19.(Fri)~10.14.(Sat)
The Pavilion of Healing was installed in the outdoor space of the campus, which regained vitality with the advent of the Post-COVID Era. Visitors can sit on soft chairs on the lawn, gaze at the sun-drenched wood, and listen to the wind chimes swaying in the breeze. It is expected to provide another source of enjoyment for students celebrating the long-awaited university festival. It is hoped that those who have endured the long pandemic can find a small breath of healing and solace in the Pavilion.
