Cæméntum [Kai-men-tum], derived from the Latin word meaning "Cut Stone," possesses a soft Materiality when mixed with water, but soon hardens and becomes cold and solid after combining with other Aggregates.
However, Cement can display diverse appearances depending on the materials and methods used for mixing. This exhibition takes an Aesthetic Perspective on Cement, viewing it as a Dynamic substance that becomes anything, much like the multifaceted nature of our lives.
The 2024 Special Exhibition presents the "Cement Aesthetics" series, Cement: Moment, which introduces works that artistically reinterpret the diverse Physical Properties of Cement. 《Cæméntum: Living Material》 is the first chapter, showcasing the work of six Young Artists actively working both domestically and internationally. They have captured various moments of Cement and Concrete through countless experiments:
Kim Hyeong-sul reveals a rough texture by scratching and carving the surface of concrete.
Jeon Ah-hyeon utilizes Resin and Cement to depict A Landscape Painting with Misty Clouds.
Jeon Chi-ho contrasts dissimilar materials—Cement and Corrugated Cardboard—to illustrate human boundaries and criteria.
LAB.CRETE combines and dismantles concrete with materials of various textures and colors, evoking Arched Architecture constructed by humans.
Peter Baran asks questions that challenge our Preconceptions by meticulously sculpting the solid Materiality of concrete.
Choi Hye-ji portrays the daily lives of individuals in the wide world with Dynamic and Colorful Hues.
Cement is a material that can be warm yet cold, soft yet hard, and can transform into any form. We encourage you to experience the Variations of Cement, the "Living Material," through this exhibition.
