Hello!

This is the Hanyang University Museum!

We are excited to begin sharing the special story behind one of our collections.

Let’s explore Analog Computer No. 3 in collaboration with 2025 Museum & Art Gallery Week!

🔍 What is an Analog Computer?

Analog computers are first-generation computers used to automatically solve advanced calculus calculations. After producing the first unit in 1962, the second unit was completed the following year. However, both were destroyed in a fire in November 1963. Today, only Analog Computer No. 3, built in 1964, remains, representing Korea’s first computer.

💻 What is the significance of Analog Computer No. 3?

Before the introduction of foreign computers such as IBM in 1967, Analog Computer No. 3 was the first domestically produced computer in Korea. Following the first two units, No. 3 was rebuilt as the country’s largest-capacity analog computer at the time and was even used in actual classroom instruction, proving its historical value.

⚙ How many components did it have? 👀

Over 610 vacuum tubes and a total of 40,000 components were used. Many parts were sourced directly by searching through the Cheonggyecheon area in Seoul.

Analog Computer No. 3, as a continuation of Korea’s first analog computer lineage, was designated a Registered Cultural Heritage of Korea in 2013.

Who made this pioneering computer that contributed to the development of science and technology in Korea?

Next, we will share the story of Dr. Lee Man-young of Hanyang University, the creator of this remarkable artifact.

We look forward to your continued interest 💛
