[2025 Museum & Art Gallery Week] Dr. Lee Man-young and the Birth of Analog Computer No. 3
Hello!
This is the Hanyang University Museum!
Shall we explore the journey of Dr. Lee Man-young and the creation of Analog Computer No. 3?
______________
👤 Who is Dr. Lee Man-young?
Dr. Lee Man-young was a world-renowned scholar in the field of information and communications and developed Korea’s first analog computer. He joined Hanyang University as a professor in 1960 and produced Analog Computer No. 1 in 1962. He continued to create up to Analog Computer No. 3 and contributed to industrial development through research and publications, pioneering areas such as cryptography and information security.
💡 How was Analog Computer No. 3 created?
Hanyang University President Kim Yeon-jun, who believed in industrial development, fully supported Dr. Lee’s research. During this period, Dr. Lee devoted himself to creating analog computers. Unfortunately, a fire in November 1963 destroyed Analog Computers No. 1 and 2. After six months of tireless effort at the university, Dr. Lee successfully produced Analog Computer No. 3 in 1964.
The birth of Analog Computer No. 3, which represents the first computer in Korea, reflects the passion and dedication of Dr. Lee Man-young.
Following the story of the artifact, Dr. Lee himself also holds the title of a “first.”
Next, we will share the life and achievements of Dr. Lee Man-young.
We look forward to your continued interest 💛
