Hello!

This is the Hanyang University Museum!

Following the story of Analog Computer No. 3, shall we now explore the “firsts” held by Dr. Lee Man-young through his life and achievements?

✨ The Many “Firsts” of Dr. Lee Man-young

In 1954, Dr. Lee Man-young went to the United States with support from the Korea-America Foundation. He enrolled in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado, earning both his master’s and doctoral degrees in electronics—the first Korean to earn a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in the U.S. He also became the first Korean employee at Boeing’s Seattle passenger aircraft production department, working in the TD research division to study issues arising in the aircraft manufacturing and testing process. After returning to Korea in 1975, he became the inaugural president of Korea Electronics and Telecommunications, taking the first steps toward domestic production of electronic switching systems.

🏆 Other Notable Achievements

After stepping down as CEO, Dr. Lee returned to Hanyang University to focus on research. He went on to produce Korea’s first analog computer, develop guided missiles, and oversee the production and installation of electronic telephone exchanges. He also contributed to the advancement of information security through the dissemination of coding theory and cryptographic technology in electronics and telecommunications, as well as internationally recognized scholarly publications. In recognition of these contributions, Dr. Lee received the Korea Engineering Award (Grand Prize) in 1998 and the Order of the Mugunghwa in 2000.

Following the story of the man behind the artifact, next we will present “A Closer Look at the Artifact,” exploring the details of our collection.

We look forward to your continued interest 💛
