[2025 Museum & Art Gallery Week] Exploring Artifacts: The Oscilloscope – Visualizing Calculated Values
Hello!
This is the Hanyang University Museum.
Last time we explored vacuum tubes through “Exploring Artifacts,”
today we introduce another important component of the Analog Computer, the oscilloscope!
______________
🔌 What is an oscilloscope?
An oscilloscope is a device that visually displays electrical signals that vary periodically, like waves. The Analog Computer No. 3 contains two oscilloscopes, which were used as “solution indicators” to record the results of input equations.
______________
💡 Still in use beyond the Analog Computer?
Oscilloscopes continue to be widely used even after the era of analog computers. In electronics, they are used to diagnose circuits and measure signals. In medicine, they are most commonly used in devices for analyzing electrocardiograms (ECG) and electroencephalograms (EEG). With the advent of digital oscilloscopes, a wide range of additional functions has become available.
______________
Next, we will explore the story of computers, which have developed at an astonishing speed since the first analog computers.
We look forward to your continued interest 💛
