[Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and Cement] 10th Anniversary of the East Asian Architecture & Urban History Colloquium and Linked Seminar for the Special Exhibition ≪Cement: Moment≫
“Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and Cement”
Hanyang University’s East Asian Architectural History Laboratory in the Department of Architecture and Hanyang University Museum are, for the first time in Korea, organizing an academic forum to shed light on the mutual relationship between cultural heritage and cement. This seminar has been prepared to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the East Asian Architecture & Urban History Colloquium, which has been held since August 2013 by the East Asian Architectural History Laboratory with the initiative and support of Vice President Cha Sangseok of Hanil Feed Co., Ltd., and it is also part of the program linked to the special exhibition ≪Cement: Moment≫ currently being held at Hanyang University Museum.
Since the nineteenth century, cement has had an enormous impact on the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage, and the evaluation of its role has generated considerable debate up to the present day. Moreover, the issues surrounding cement are not limited to cultural heritage alone; there is much to consider in the realm of artistic creation as well.
In this academic seminar, we invite two architectural historians and two art historians to engage in an in-depth discussion of the impact that cement, as a modern material, has had on the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage. We look forward to the active participation of interested researchers and students, and to a productive exchange of ideas.
